About alapana

alapana is a premier institution in Singapore founded in 1999. The anchor person is Mrs R.Banumathy, daughter and disciple of Sangita Kalanidhi Dr S.Ramanathan.  Mrs R.Banumathy and Sri V.Raghuraman are the founder Directors of alapana. The institution has an advisory panel of scholars and persons of respectable standing in the society.

The objective of alapana is to impart quality education in fine arts - Indian classical music and Bharatanatyam. Quality & Variety are the hallmark of alapana.

As at the end of 2009, alapana's student strength stands at 450, and it is growing steadily.

Performance opportunities for students are aplenty and students are groomed to perform on stage.Furthermore, there is an in-house stage at alapana, complete with an excellent sound system and the classrooms are well equipped.

The prime location of alapana easily makes it one of the best-located Indian Institutions in Singapore - On the Serangoon Road, 100meters from  Farrer Park MRT (Train station), adjacent to Sri Srinivasa Perumal temple. It is also proximal to the bus stop, 24-hour supermarkets like Mustafa in the neighbourhood, best of the Indian Vegetarian restaurants nearby etc.

alapana students have won National level competitions conducted by the National Arts Council, Singapore. Orchestral & Choir presentations of alapana are known for their innovative and originality.

We at alapana, adhere to a strictly structured syllabus. "Sruti Manjari", authored by Mrs R.Banumathy (blessed with a foreword by none other than Sri Semmangudi R.Srinivasa Iyer) and "Laya Manjari' writen by Sri V.Raghuraman (with blessings of the Mridangam Maestro, Sri Umayalpuram K.Sivaraman)are our prescribed texts for Carnatic Music and Mridangam, respectively. Additionally, Dr S.Ramanathan's books are our commonly-used reference guides.

alapana music students have an added advantage of learning authentic, undiuted Indian Music Theory from their teachers. From time to time, alapana also conducts a special course for very young children also and the course is called alapana balak culture (abc).

alapana conducts 3 types of classes - Regular course, Flexi & Intensive.

Students initially join the 'Standard' course and move upwards to go to "Intermediate' Level and 'Advanced' Level after qualifying in the examinations. There are 3 stages are every Level. Students at Intermedite and Advanced Levels are also required to do project assignments. Examinations are conducted every year and certificates are issued.

The accommodation for alapana  teachers is in the same building upstairs.
