About alapana

alapana is a premier institution in Singapore founded in 1999. The anchor person is Mrs R.Banumathy, daughter and disciple of Sangita Kalanidhi Dr S.Ramanathan.  Mrs R.Banumathy and Sri V.Raghuraman are the founder Directors of alapana. The institution has an advisory panel of scholars and persons of respectable standing in the society. 

The objective of alapana is to impart quality education in fine arts - Indian classical music and Bharatanatyam. Quality & Variety are the hallmark of alapana.

As at the end of 2007, alapana's student strength stands at 400, and growing steadily.

Performance opportunities are aplenty and students are groomed to perform on stage.Furthermore, there is an in-house stage at alapana, complete with an excellent sound system and the classrooms are well equipped.

The prime location of alapana easily makes it one of the best-located Indian Institutions in Singapore - On the Serangoon Road, 100meters from  Farrer Park MRT (Train station), adjacent to Sri Srinivasa Perumal temple. It is also proximal to the bus stop, 24-hour supermarkets like Mustafa in the neighbourhood, best of the Indian Vegetarian restaurants nearby etc.

alapana students have won National level competitions conducted by the National Arts Council, Singapore. Orchestral & Choir presentations of alapana are known for their innovative and originality.

We at alapana, adhere to a strictly structured syllabus. "Sruti Manjari", authored by Mrs R.Banumathy (blessed with a foreword by none other than Sri Semmangudi R.Srinivasa Iyer) and "Laya Manjari' writen by Sri V.Raghuraman (with blessings of the Mridangam Maestro, Sri Umayalpuram K.Sivaraman)are our prescribed texts for Carnatic Music and Mridangam, respectively. Additionally, Dr S.Ramanathan's books are our commonly-used reference guides.

alapana music students have an added advantage of learning authentic, undiuted Indian Music Theory from their teachers. From time to time, alapana also conducts a special course for very young children also and the course is called alapana balak culture (abc).

alapana conducts 3 types of classes - Regular course, Flexi & Intensive.

Students initially join the 'Standard' course and move upwards to go to "Intermediate' Level and 'Advanced' Level after qualifying in the examinations. There are 3 stages are every Level. Students at Intermedite and Advanced Levels are also required to do project assignments. Examinations are conducted every year and certificates are issued. 

The accommodation for alapana  teachers is in the same building upstairs.

Teaching Positions in alapana, Singapore

Applications are invited for teaching positions in Carnatic music- Vocal, Veena and Violin& Bharatanatyam at alapana, Singapore. Professionally qualified candidates with adequate experience may apply by email to alapana@pacific.net.sg.

Vacancies for Bharatanatyam, Carnatic Vocal and Violin will be filled up immediately, in the order of priority. Others will be placed on our panel. We will be calling the candidates from time to time froom the panel to fill up the vacancies as and when it arises.

What we look for:

1. Professional qualification

2. Adequate experience in teaching with competent performing abilities.

3. Candidates recommended by renowned Gurus will have an advantage

4. Ability to teach multiple-subjects will be favourable. Proficiency in English is essential.

5. Physical fitness and mental robustness is a must.

6. Valid passport with readiness to join within a month of call letter.

7. Right attitude to grow with the institution is as imortant as the apptitude.

Certain specific requirements -

Bharatanatyam:-

a) Candidates who have completed their training at Bharatakalanjali of the Dhananjayans and/or Kalakshetra, Chennai will be given preference.

b) Ability to perform Nattuvangam is a must.

c) Proven Choreography skills.

d) A wide repertoire and willingness to learn more.

e) Ability to source materials required for teaching, such as the recorded version of the items and also costume & stage requirements for performances..

.f) Opportunities for performing will be limited as this is a teaching position.

Music :-

a) A good Patantharam with ability to write proper notations .

b) Knowledge of tradition as well as the latest trends in Carnatic music field without compromising on the classical aspects.

c) A rich repertoire with a strong foundation in compositions of the Trinity.

d) Ability to teach basics patiently as well as Raga alapana, Neraval & Kalpana Swaram.

e)  Vocal teachers are required to be competent to sing for Bharatanatyam Margam programmes as well.

f) Violin and Veena  teachers should have a neat finger-technique and a proper style.

Application Process:

Candidates may send in their application in the prescribed form as an attachment with an email to us.

Shortlisted candidates will be notified by email and subsequently invited for the first round of interview over telephone.

Those who reach the final interview will meet up with our representative in Chennai. After successful completion of the final round of interview, the selected candidate will sign up to join in about a month's time. Appointment is subject to the Immigration approval by the Singapore Government.:
